The Disarmament and International Security Committee is the First Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations. As its name suggests it deals with issues that might lead to achieving world peace.

According to Article 11 of the UN Charter the General Assembly is authorized to tackle issues dealing with disarmament. Based on this authorization, the GA can make recommendations to the member states and the Security Council on the matter. The first resolution of the GA was in 1946 and called for the elimination of atomic weapons and any other types of weapons responsible for mass destruction.

The First Committee of the GA dealing with disarmament was created in order to offer states a proper space for states to discuss their positions on disarmament issues and to work together compromises or tools to better approach this sensitive matter. It allows states to build consensus on the matter and agree upon common norms and behaviours. Through this committee, governments discuss how to achieve security arrangements, not by maximizing weapons’ arsenals, but rather reducing these arsenals as well as the rates of weapons ‘production.

This Committee meets every year in October for 4-5 weeks, after the General Assembly General meeting. All UN member states can attend the meetings of DISEC.

Chairpersons

Oana Elena Branda

My name is Oana Elena Branda, I am 26 years old and a second year PhD student in the History of International Relations at the University of Bucharest. My main interests focus on foreign policy, diplomacy and security studies in areas such as the Middle East, United States and United Kingdom.

I have participated in several MUNs until now and this would be my third time chairing a committee. Why still choose MUNs at 26? Because they are a great opportunity to put my knowledge into practice, to practise my negotiation skills, to meet new and interesting people and last, but not least, to have fun.

I intend to become a diplomat in the future but until I get to make decisions for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I am satisfied with the DISEC of BISMUN2012 as my playground! Till we meet in March 2012, let’s MUN!!!!

Michael Tsertsidis

Hello, my name is Michael Tsertsidis , I am 19 years old and I am in my sophomore year in the faculty of law of the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki in Greece. I started participating in MUNs back in high school when I was sixteen and have loved simulations ever since , which is why I continue to participate in as many conferences as I can. So far, I have attended several MUNs as a delegate but only once was I a Chairperson, so BISMUN 2012 will be my second chairing experience, which , after having enjoyed last year’s BISMUN so much, , makes me really excited about this year’s conference.

Therefore, I am sure that BISMUN 2012 will be an unforgettable experience for everyone and I can reassure you that I am ready to do my best to make this conference, in all its aspects, meet your expectations. Feel free me to contact me anytime should you need anything whatsoever.
