The Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the UN and it has the primary responsibility, under the Charter, for the maintenance of international peace and security. It is organized so as to be able to function continuously, and a representative of each of its members must be present at all times at United Nations Headquarters. The functions and powers of the Security Council are mainly:
- to maintain international peace and security in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations;
- to investigate any dispute or situation which mightlead to international friction;
- to recommend methods of adjusting such disputes or the terms of settlement;
- to formulate plans for the establishment of a system to regulate armaments;
- to determine the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression and to recommend what action should be taken;
- to call on Members to apply economic sanctions and other measures not involving the use of force to prevent or stop aggression;
- to take military action against an aggressor;
- to recommend the admission of new Members;
- to exercise the trusteeship functions of the United Nations in "strategic areas";
- to recommend to the General Assembly the appointment of the Secretary-General and, together with the Assembly, to elect the Judges of the International Court of Justice.
Chairpersons
Persefoni Ririka
My name is Persefoni Ririka and I am 22 year old addict of MUNs coming from Thessaloniki. I am currently studying International Economics at the department of International and European Studies at the University of Macedonia. I speak English and Spanish and I love travelling and learning about other cultures and lifestyles.
My MUN journey began when I entered the University in 2008 at ThessISMUN, where I was an administrative assistant, and since then I have participated in more than 16 conferences around Europe, some of which were held in Bucharest, Ljubljana, Cambridge, Bonn, Barcelona, Milan and Istanbul, as a delegate, chairperson, crisis director, executive assistant and journalist. Moreover, this year I had the privilege of being elected as the head of Human Resources at Bringing Europeans Together Association.
At BISMUN 2012, I have the honor of welcoming you at the Security Council as a chairperson. I am looking forward to meeting and working with you! Please do not hesitate to contact my co-chair and me in case you need anything! Last but not least remember that MUNs are both work and fun and that “you have to be the change you want to see in the world”!
