The General Assembly was created in 1950 and is the largest and main decision- making organ of the United Nations. After the development of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in 1948, the third of the six committees of the GA was chartered under the name Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee. Like all the other committees of the GA, SOCHUM’s resolutions, decisions or recommendations are not binding for the members of the United Nations, albeit are very important, since they are mostly related to humanitarian and human rights issues. Since its creation, SOCHUM’s aim was to uphold and ensure the application of human rights of people around the world while dealing and addressing issues such as social and sustainable development, drug control and crime prevention, elimination of all kinds of discrimination and racism against people, advancement of women and other human rights and social questions.
Because most international conflicts have a social aspect, SOCHUM has become one of the most significant bodies of the UN and benefits from a wide jurisdiction. However SOCHUM cannot demand action, but only suggests that actions should be taken.
Manolis Kalaintzis
Hello, my name is Manos Kalaintzis. I am in my 3rd year of studies in the law faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. I have participated in several MUNs both as a delegate and as a chair. My passion for international law keeps me attached to the principles that the United Nations serves. Since my first MUN was BISMUN 2010 I have a special bond with this conference and I envision this year to raise the bar even higher for the years to come. We have chosen this year’s agenda according to the theme of the conference ‘’Human Security and Positive Liberty’’ which qualifies both as a challenge and as a principle for the contemporary world. Following the course of events we could not ignore the issues that have emerged through the pit fire the international community is for the past few years.
We are here to assist in anything you might request in your exciting and intriguing trip in international relations and be by your sides in the serious task of resolving international challenges. You can contact me or my wonderful colleague Katy Simitzis for any request concerning your research. I look forward to meet you all.
Regards
Manos
Katy Simitzis
Hello honourable delegates,
My name is Katy Simitzis I am proud to present myself as the co-chair of SOCHUM at BISMUN 2012. I currently study at the International School of Bucharest, and I am planning to go study Business Law at university soon.
My first MUN was BISMUN 2010, where I was the youngest delegate of the entire committee. Several MUN experiences later, I received two consecutive Honorary Mentions from BISMUN 2011 (Brazil, Security Council) and MUNIST 2011 (Germany, European Council).
My MUN experience did not stop at being a delegate; I organized and was the President of the General Assembly of ISB MUN 2011, as well as the Secretary-General of ISB MUN 2012.
This year at BISMUN, a challenging agenda has been presented to us, featuring intense debates and great opportunities for cooperation towards common and intriguing resolutions. I trust that you are ready to face the challenge given to you, under the conditions of a competitive and interactive environment.
I am absolutely positive that BISMUN 2012 will be a memorable MUN, and I look forward to meeting you all soon and see you in action! And let’s not forget the infamous motto: work hard, but party harder!
